The health department has completed all contact tracing and we are now comfortable in our ability to open safely on Tuesday, 9/22/2020. Remember that school pictures will take place tomorrow. They usually start with kindergarten in the morning and go from there. The order forms and code are attached for your convenience.

To our BAS families: A confirmed case of coronavirus, (COVID-19) has been identified at Baraga Area Schools. We are working closely with the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department to identify exposures and prevent further cases. The school feels it is in the best interest and safety of the staff, students, and community to close the building to students tomorrow, September 21, 2020, in order to allow for thorough contact tracing. The virus that causes COVID-19 is thought to spread mainly from person to person, through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Spread is more likely when people are close contact with one another (within about 6 feet for at least 15 minutes). Illness begins 2 to 14 days after a person is exposed. The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar in children and adults. Symptoms can include: Fever, cough, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, runny or stuffy nose, loss of taste or smell, abdominal pain. At this time close contacts with exposures have been notified separately and are following guidelines of WUPHD. There are many things that can be done to keep our schools, homes, and communities “COVID-19 free” and protect ourselves and loved ones: Children and adults should stay home when ill. Washing hands often with soap and running warm water for at least 20 seconds. If a hand washing station is not available, use hand sanitizer properly. Gels, rubs, and hand wipes work well against COVID-19 if they contain at least 60% alcohol. Throw wipes in the trash after use. Practice Good Respiratory Etiquette (cover a cough with elbow versus hand). If you have questions, please contact Western Upper Peninsula Health Department at (906) 482-7382. If your child is identified as a close contact separate communication will be sent. Additional information can be found at: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html Thank you, Richard Sarau Superintendent Baraga Area Schools 906-353-6664

ATTENTION ONLINE LEARNERS & PARENTS. The way that attendance is being taken for online learning is from assignment completion and through contacts made with the teacher and student. Students should be checking their emails on a daily basis and reply to the teacher reaching out to them. If the student does not reply, according to the ISD, they are considered absent, so please respond top any teacher reaching out to you. If you have any questions about the work on either APEX or Moby Max, please reach out to the teacher of record for the class. Thanks for your patience and cooperation in the matter.

A special thank you for their patience to all of the students and families who have chosen the online learning for this school year. APEX learning is up and running and after talking with Achieve3000, they hope to be up and running by tomorrow. One of the many good things about online learning is that students are not confined to the regular school day or week and despite not starting when the inperson students did, they can work at their own pace and "catch up" rather quickly. Thank you again and if you have any questions please contact Mr. Scott at 363-6661

I apologize as I should have had this going since day one but in order to keep our K-5 students cohorted and stick to our school plan, every grade will play within their specific zone for that day for recess. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but it is all being done to keep the kids safe. Thanks for your patience and understanding on the matter.

In accordance with guidance from the CDC, at this time gaiters are not acceptable face coverings. So unfortunately, they will not be able to be used. If recommendations change, we will update you all. Also, parents may check out the 6-12 online curriculum we will be offering for virtual learning by going to  https://www.apexlearning.com
